University of Aberdeen Asthma Treatment Research

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that scientists at the University of Aberdeen have discovered a potential new therapeutic target for treating asthma symptoms; notes that the research, which uses animal models, has identified that blocking the action of specific protein molecules that are strongly associated with inflammation and tissue damage was able to reverse scarring in lungs, leading to better results than current treatments; understands that asthma affects more than seven million people in the UK and contributed to 1,465 deaths in the UK in 2022; believes that this research may pave the way for new treatments for several other diseases as well as asthma, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver; congratulates Dr Tara Sutherland, lecturer of immunology, who led the research at the University of Aberdeen in collaboration with scientists at the University of Manchester, and hopes that this is the beginning of a breakthrough in treating asthma and other chronic conditions.
