Celebrating the Life and Pioneering Conservation Legacy of Dr Jane Goodall DBE

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the profound and lasting contribution of ethologist, anthropologist and global conservationist Dr Jane Goodall DBE, who has died at the age of 91; commends her initial and groundbreaking research in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, which began in 1960 and revealed the complex intelligence and social behaviours of wild chimpanzees, including the use of tools, thereby fundamentally reshaping humanity's understanding of its closest relatives; believes that her scientific rigour and compassionate approach have served as a worldwide inspiration to scientists, particularly women in STEM; appreciates the establishment of the Jane Goodall Institute and its global youth programme, Roots & Shoots, which mobilises young people, including those across Scotland, to take action on environmental, conservation and humanitarian issues; expresses deep gratitude for Dr Goodall’s unwavering advocacy in highlighting the urgent need for primate and habitat preservation; agrees with Dr Goodall, who was a UN Messenger of Peace, that “there can never be world peace until we learn to live in harmony with nature as well as with each other”; notes her support for Stop Ecocide International and ecocide law, and calls upon all sectors of society to heed her message of hope and collective action for a sustainable future.
