Addressing Dangerous Parking at Schools

The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern the reported ongoing issues surrounding unsafe and inconsiderate parking practices around schools in both the Greenock and Inverclyde constituency and across Scotland; believes that many parents and carers, often unintentionally, prioritise convenience over safety by parking in restricted zones, on pavements, or in ways that obstruct visibility and access for children, particularly young people who are disabled; acknowledges what it sees as the serious risks that this poses to pupils, including increased chances of road accidents and reduced independence for those walking or cycling to school; commends the efforts of the school staff, local authorities and community groups that have worked to raise awareness and implement safer travel initiatives, and notes the calls on the Scottish Government and local authorities to explore measures to improve road safety around schools, including enhanced enforcement, infrastructure improvements and greater public education on the importance of responsible parking behaviour.
