Shetland Women Win ScottishPower Highlands and Islands League Cup

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Shetland Women football team on winning the ScottishPower Highlands and Islands League Cup; understands that Shetland Women beat the previous winners, Sutherland Women Football Club, to claim the title by seven goals to nil; commends the efforts of Shetland Women’s players and coaches to ensure that the team could participate in the competition, which involves lengthy and expensive travel from Shetland to the Scottish mainland; understands that, as the team cannot afford to travel away every week, they practice by playing in a boys’ under-16 league to get competition-ready; notes that the recent intercounty match against Orkney was held in Shetland and Shetland Women won 8- 0; understands that Shetland is seeing more girls and women getting involved in football, with Shetland Women building towards a return to international football at the 2027 Island Games in the Faroe Islands; believes that the strong performance from Shetland Women is a testament to their dedication to women’s football, and congratulates everyone involved on their success in the ScottishPower Women’s Highlands and Islands League Cup.
