Celebrating Margaret McAuley Rae During Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates what it sees as the pioneering achievements of Margaret McAuley Rae during Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week; recognises that Margaret was Scotland’s first-ever women’s football captain, leading the national team in 1972, at a time when women’s football was still banned; acknowledges what it sees as her vital role in sustaining the women’s game until the ban was lifted in 1974, laying the foundations for future generations of girls and women to participate in football; commends her club career with Westthorn United, based at the Hoover factory in Cambuslang, and her continued connection to the community in Hamilton; notes the ongoing campaign to induct Margaret into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame, and believes that honouring her legacy would be a powerful and timely celebration of women’s sport in Scotland.
