Celebration of Diversity in Scottish Football through UNITED We Stand Campaign
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the SPFL, SWPL and SPFL Trust on the launch of the second annual UNITED content series, UNITED We Stand; recognises that this initiative celebrates the rich mix of nationalities, cultures and backgrounds that make Scottish football so vibrant; notes that the 2025's campaign coincides with Black History Month and complements Show Racism the Red Card’s annual Weekend of Action; commends the series for shining a light on the people and communities that make the game more inclusive, united and representative of modern Scotland; understands that the campaign features powerful new stories from across the country, including the work of Big Hearts Community Trust, the official charity of Heart of Midlothian, whose Welcome Through Football programme supports refugees and asylum seekers as they settle in Edinburgh; notes the contribution of Hearts' midfielder, Beni Baningime, who shared his personal experience of moving to the UK as a child from the Democratic Republic of Congo; further notes the feature on Dundee United’s diverse squad, including the Guinea-Bissau international, Panutche Camará, and his Croatian teammates, Ivan Dolcek and Vicko Ševelj, who reflected on their shared experiences of playing in Scotland and the welcoming nature of fans and teammates; recognises the inclusion of Glasgow City’s internationals Linda Motlhalo, who is South African, and Natalia Wróbel, who is from Poland; believes that their friendship and success on and off the pitch highlights the strength of diversity in the women’s game; acknowledges the continued efforts of the SPFL Trust and community trusts across Scotland in using football as a force for good, supporting inclusion and equality and opportunity for all, and celebrates the UNITED We Stand campaign as an inspiring example of how football can bring communities together, challenge prejudice and reflect the inclusive spirit of modern Scotland.
