Improving the Accessibility of Scotland’s Streets

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the vital importance of ensuring that Scotland’s streets and public spaces, including in the Greenock and Inverclyde constituency, are designed to be accessible, inclusive and safe for everyone, including people with sight loss, mobility impairments and other disabilities; acknowledges the concerns raised by Guide Dogs in its report,  Designing for Inclusion, which highlights that elements of street design that incorporate cycling in pedestrian spaces can create significant barriers and safety risks for blind and partially sighted people; believes that inclusive street design benefits all members of society, creating safer, more navigable and welcoming spaces that encourage active travel and community life; welcomes the work being carried out by local authorities and partners to make improvements to the built environment; notes the view that it is of vital importance that there is meaningful consultation with disabled people at every stage of planning and design; further notes the view that there is a need for consistent national standards on inclusive design, including detectable kerbs, tactile paving and clear, obstacle-free pedestrian routes, and acknowledges calls on the Scottish Government and local authorities to continue working with disability organisations and transport providers to ensure that all future street design and transport infrastructure projects in Scotland are accessible, inclusive and designed with safety and accessibility for everyone at their heart.
