University of St Andrews and UNISON Agreement on Cancer Support
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the agreement achieved between the UNISON's University of St Andrews branch and the university’s leadership to implement new support for staff affected by and recovering from cancer; recognises the devastating impact that cancer has on people’s lives and that those recovering from cancer face a range of treatments and aftercare; understands that the agreed measures include the extension of the length of time allowed for staff to make a phased returned to work on full pay from eight weeks to 12, a closer working relationship with Maggie’s Centre in Kirkcaldy, a dedicated website for staff living with cancer, improved information to be provided by the university’s human resources department, improved communication with line managers to agree contact schedules and seminars on cancer in the workplace; welcomes the agreement as a significant measure to support those university staff who live with cancer; commends the UNISON's University of St Andrew branch under the leadership of its chairperson Alex Duncan for its effort in reaching the agreement, and believes that the measures adopted by the University of St Andrews set an example which other employers should consider.
