The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Blantyre United FC and its founder, Alan Dunsmore, on the club’s remarkable emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic as a vital source of support for young men in South Lanarkshire; notes that the club was formed in August 2021 after Alan recognised the social isolation and withdrawal experienced by many young men during lockdown; recognises the outstanding community spirit created by Blantyre United FC, which not only provides opportunities for exercise and competitive football but also fosters openness, friendship, and mutual support among players; acknowledges the significant mental health challenges faced by young men in Scotland, and the importance of safe, informal spaces - such as those created by this club - where individuals feel able to speak openly about their struggles; understands the dedication, empathy, and leadership shown by Alan and his committee in building a team that has gone from training in a public park to winning league and cup titles while supporting the wellbeing of its players, and commends Blantyre United FC for its invaluable contribution to mental health and community resilience.
