Welcoming the University of Aberdeen HPV Study

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the findings of a University of Aberdeen study that show that pregnant women who have been vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) at school are less likely to experience serious pregnancy-related complications; acknowledges that the study, which is the first in the world to investigate the link between HPV vaccination and a range of adverse pregnancy outcomes; notes that incidences of pre-eclampsia, pre-term prelabour rupture of membranes and antepartum haemorrhage were significantly reduced in women who had been vaccinated against the virus; understands that researchers from the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian examined data routinely collected from 9,200 women in Aberdeen between 2006 and 2020 as part of the Aberdeen Maternity and Neonatal Databank, which is a database of all pregnancies occurring in Aberdeen since 1950, a resource unique to Aberdeen and the longest running continuously recording database in the world; believes that this research reinforces the importance of Scotland’s nationwide HPV immunisation programme, which was introduced by the Scottish National Party administration in 2008 and expanded to boys as well in 2019 to further increase herd immunity and reduce the risk of HPV-related cancers in all genders, and hopes that this research helps ensure uptake of the vaccine remains high.
