Marking Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Week

The motion

That the Parliament recognises Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Week, beginning on 12 January 2026, as an important opportunity to raise awareness of the six less survivable common cancers, which are cancers of the lungs, liver, brain, oesophagus, pancreas and stomach; understands with deep concern that these cancers together account for around 44% of all cancer deaths in Scotland, claiming over 9,000 lives each year, yet continue to have poor survival outcomes; considers that, despite their impact, less survivable cancers receive a disproportionately low share of cancer research funding, limiting progress in early diagnosis, treatment and survival; acknowledges the work of the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce in representing people affected by these cancers and in highlighting what it sees as the urgent need to close the survival and research gap; considers that Scotland is home to world-leading cancer researchers and innovative research activity, and believes that, with sustained government commitment and investment, Scotland can lead the way in transforming outcomes for people affected by less survivable cancers; welcomes efforts to highlight research activity during Less Survivable Cancers Awareness Week, and thanks the people with lived experience, charities and researchers for their dedication in improving awareness of these devastating cancers; calls on the Scottish Government to increase and better target research funding for less survivable cancers to address what it sees as long-standing inequalities in research investment, and emphasises that closing any research gap is essential to improving early diagnosis, developing new treatments and, ultimately, saving lives.
