LGBT History Month

The motion

That the Parliament recognises February as LGBT History Month, which was founded in 2005 by Schools OUT to highlight the achievements of LGBTQIA+ people throughout history and in the present; notes that the theme for 2026 is "Science and Innovation", which seeks to draw attention to the way that science and technology have been used as tools to harm LGBTQIA+ people, but also to significantly improve their lives, as well as to highlight LGBTQIA+ people’s contributions to scientific and technological advances; condemns the use of pseudo-scientific “treatments” of LGBTQIA+ people that seek to change or eliminate their sexual orientation or gender identity; celebrates the progress that has been made in knowledge and understanding of HIV, including access to PrEP and that "undetectable = untransmissible"; reaffirms Scotland’s commitment to ending new HIV transmissions by 2030; believes that improving the diversity of people contributing to STEM improves the quality of scientific advancements, and notes that there is still more that Scotland can do to remove barriers to equal access to STEM careers, such as those highlighted by Equate Scotland in its 2023 report, Women in the Scottish STEM Landscape, which found that more than half of LGBTQIA+ women did not feel confident in reporting experiences of exclusion or discrimination to their employers, and more than 80% felt that not enough was being done to create inclusive workplaces and educational institutions.
