Hope for Glasgow Tree to Bring European Glory Home

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the Argyle Street Ash in Glasgow on being entered into the European Tree of the Year competition, for which public voting is open until 22 February 2026, competing against 12 other remarkable trees from across Europe; notes that the tree was named winner of the 2025 UK Tree of the Year and is a cherished urban icon that has stood for around 170 years, witnessing Glasgow’s history from horse-drawn trams to the modern cityscape; acknowledges the exceptional care and stewardship of arborist David Treanor over recent years, whose work has supported the tree’s continued survival despite challenges such as ash dieback disease; understands the importance of urban trees in enhancing biodiversity, improving air quality and creating inviting green spaces that contribute to the health and wellbeing of city communities; congratulates the people of Glasgow for publicly nominating and supporting the Argyle Street Ash in the UK competition, demonstrating pride in this symbol of resilience, community connection and natural heritage; acknowledges the tree’s unique role as an example of how nature and the built environment can co-exist and enrich each other; recognises the contribution of the Woodland Trust, local supporter, and David Treanor in raising awareness of the value of urban trees, and commends all involved for sharing the story of the Argyle Street Ash on a European stage, celebrating its resilience, history and beauty, and highlighting the vital role that trees play in Scotland's cities.
