Glasgow Man Championing Male Breast Cancer Support
The motion
That the Parliament recognises Paul Steele, from Springboig in Glasgow, who, following his own diagnosis of breast cancer and subsequent remission, has established Male Breast Cancer Support, a voluntary service providing advice, counselling and emotional support to men diagnosed with breast cancer across Scotland; notes that male breast cancer is rare, affecting only a small proportion of those diagnosed each year, and that dedicated support for men has historically been limited; acknowledges that Paul’s initiative enables men to access tailored guidance, share experiences and reduce isolation following diagnosis, while raising awareness of the disease and promoting understanding among families, communities and healthcare professionals; understands the importance of early engagement with health services and the value of peer support in improving wellbeing and outcomes for men affected by breast cancer; notes the encouragement and guidance provided by healthcare professionals, including those at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre; recognises how Paul’s work complements existing clinical and voluntary support networks; acknowledges the wider impact of Paul’s efforts in challenging misconceptions that breast cancer is a woman-only disease and in encouraging open conversations about men’s health, and commends Paul for his leadership, advocacy and dedication to ensuring that men diagnosed with breast cancer in Glasgow receive the support, understanding and reassurance that they need.
