Honouring Café D’Jaconelli for a Century of Community and Culture

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the enduring significance of Café D’Jaconelli in Maryhill as a long-standing community institution, serving generations of Glaswegians for over a century and reflecting the experiences, resilience and contributions of Scottish-Italian families in Scotland; notes the opening of a new exhibition at Maryhill Burgh Halls, which was curated by the Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust and explores the café’s history, its appearance in Trainspotting and its place within the broader context of Italian migration, family entrepreneurship and the development of small, community-focused businesses across Scotland; acknowledges the pride and dedication of the Jaconelli family, including Paul Jaconelli, in its lasting role in the social and cultural life of Maryhill and beyond; understands what it sees as the wider cultural and social importance of immigrant-run cafés and small businesses in shaping community identity, fostering social connections and contributing to the vibrancy of towns and cities across Scotland; notes that the exhibition brings together photographs, personal stories and memorabilia to preserve memories of everyday life and celebrate the contribution of Scottish-Italian families to Glasgow’s heritage, and commends the Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust and Heritage Coordinator Aurora Segnan for their work in making this history accessible and engaging to the public from 6 February to 10 April 2026, ensuring that the legacy of Café D’Jaconelli continues to be recognised and celebrated.
