High Transmission Charges Putting Projects at Risk

The motion

That the Parliament notes reports that renewables investment in the north of Scotland is under pressure due to high transmission charges; understands that the 2GW West of Orkney Windfarm project has been put on pause, with the developers of the site reportedly citing Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) costs as the reason, saying that they make it “impossible to compete against projects proposed in England”; notes the reported comments from Ocean Winds that due to transmission charges “the market is saying don’t build in the north”; believes that comments such as these demonstrate that high transmission charges, which are decided by the UK Government, are putting Scotland’s energy transition at risk, and calls on the UK Government to stop delaying and get on with reforming the transmission charges regime, and stop what it sees as the unfair system where energy generators near London are subsidised to connect to the grid while those in Scotland are made to pay significant sums to do so.
