Aberdeen Astronomy Advance
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the University of Aberdeen on receiving planning permission for a new astronomy facility in the grounds of Cruickshank Botanic Garden; notes that the facility, which is due to open later in 2026, will be the home of a powerful telescope with advanced imaging equipment and will support the university’s astrophysics degree programme, which is delivered by the Department of Physics; understands that the opening will coincide with the bicentenary of the foundation of the Cromwell Tower Observatory, located in the King’s College quadrangle, which is the university’s existing observatory, established in 1826, but which has not been operational for over two decades; believes that this new facility will build on the legacy of Anne Cruickshank, who bequeathed her whole estate to the University of Aberdeen upon her death, having previously donated land, buildings and funds for the establishment of the Cruickshank Botanic Garden in 1898, and her father, John Cruickshank, who was Professor of Mathematics at Marischal College and was responsible for maintaining scientific apparatus, including telescopes; thanks the Miss Anne H Cruickshank’s Special Trust and Dr C Alan Young and Norma Young Fund for being the primary funders of this project, and wishes all those involved the very best of luck with their endeavours.
