That the Parliament expresses concern following a fire at Yellowcraig, one of East Lothian’s most popular coastal beauty spots, which required the attendance of firefighters and occupied emergency resources for a significant period; notes that the incident occurred during a period of dry weather and heightened wildfire risk, conditions, which increase the likelihood of fires spreading rapidly and causing environmental damage; understands that the fire is believed to have been linked to the improper disposal of a barbecue or similar open flame; notes that emergency crews were required for approximately two hours to bring the incident under control, diverting resources that might have been required for other emergencies; recognises the warning from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service that the vast majority of wildfires are the result of human behaviour; emphasises the serious risks posed by careless use of naked flames in outdoor settings, particularly during periods of high or extreme wildfire risk; underscores the potential impact on wildlife, natural habitats and communities; supports the call from firefighters, for members of the public to exercise greater responsibility when visiting countryside and coastal areas, and urges all residents and visitors to follow safety guidance and properly extinguish barbecues and fires, to help protect Scotland’s natural environment and emergency services capacity.
