UNDER-OCCUPANCY PENALTY AND DISCRIMINATION

That this House welcomes the recent Court of Appeal ruling that the bedroom tax discriminates against a victim of domestic violence and the family of a disabled teenager; notes that this ruling only applies to two individual cases in spite of the fact that there are around 300 similar domestic violence cases and thousands of severely disabled children in a comparable position; further notes the opinions of Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas, Lord Justice Tomlinson and Lord Justice Vos that the Secretary of State has not justified the admitted discrimination in the aforementioned cases; congratulates the Scottish Government for committing £90 million to mitigate the impact of the bedroom tax on 72,000 households in Scotland since 2013, four-fifths of which are home to a disabled adult; and understands that the evidence proves that the bedroom tax is unfairly attacking the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in society.
