To ask the Scottish Government what funding it is providing to help find a cure for peritoneal mesothelioma.
Answer · Jeane Freeman · 26 Jan 2021
The Scottish Government’s Chief Scientist Office (CSO) operates open competitive grant and fellowship schemes providing opportunities for funding for applied research across the wide range of health conditions and public health and care challenges in Scotland, which can include applications for research on mesothelioma. Applications submitted to these schemes are subject to independent expert peer review with funding recommendations made by independent expert committees. Currently, CSO is supporting (with a total of about £44k from CSO), along with NHS Education for Scotland, a three year postdoctoral clinical lectureship investigating a new avenue for potential treatment of mesothelioma, although this research is directed towards mesothelioma in the lung rather than the lining of the stomach (peritoneal mesothelioma).

To ask the Scottish Government what pans it has to eradicate asbestos from all (a) public and (b) private buildings.
Answer · Kevin Stewart · 2 Feb 2021
The management of asbestos in buildings is a reserved matter for the UK Government and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has UK wide responsibility for enforcement of the legislation and regulations.
The Scottish Government has written to the HSE and UK Government to ask what plans there are for the eradication of the substance from buildings in Scotland.

To ask the Scottish Government, in light of the COVID-19 outbreak, whether it has given Tesco in Scotland additional rates relief other than the 1.5 pence non-domestic rates increase due in April 2020-21 but not implemented.
Answer · Kate Forbes · 12 May 2020
We are determined to help keep companies in business and our financial support now exceeds the £2.3 billion passed on from the UK Government.
This includes a universal 1.6% relief available to all non-domestic properties, and a 100% relief for businesses in the Retail, Hospitality, Leisure and Airport sectors.
The Scottish Government does not comment on the eligibility of specific ratepayers. Local authorities administer the system and award reliefs, and the interpretation of the relevant legislation is a matter for them.
