Ban the sale of Chinese lanterns in the UK

What the petition asks

Wildlife, farm animals, domestic pets, aircraft and coastguard services are all adversely affected by these Lanterns.
Decorative Chinese lanterns are causing fires, killing livestock and wildlife, littering the countryside and being mistaken for distress flares.
Please ban their use and sale

The Smethwick blaze in July 2013 shows the devastation these lanterns can cause.
Farmers say livestock have died after eating the wire and paper remnants and they can easily get caught / trapped in the wire.
The UK Coastguard says it has seen a large increase in the number of rescue teams and lifeboats being called out to false alarms.

Why it was rejected

There was already a petition about this issue. Duplicates are rejected so signatures collect in one place.
