Petition · past parliament

Ensure there is a TV debate for the 2017 General Election between party leaders.

Rejected 14 signatures

What the petition asks

Whatever your political leaning a democracy functions best when the electorate is well informed. The early reports that the Conservative party will not partake is frankly disturbing. As the ruling party they have a responsibility more than anyone to champion democracy. Ensure complete attendance.

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

A decision about whether to host a debate would be the responsibility of the broadcasters, not the UK Government or Parliament.

A decision about whether to take part in a debate would be for Theresa May to make as leader of the Conservative party, not as the Prime Minister. We can only accept petitions about the Prime Minister’s actions as part of the Government, not as the leader of a political party.
