The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern that Peter Nicol, the world number one squash player, is reported to be considering transferring to play for England instead of Scotland; considers that Mr Nicol, born in Inverurie, has an exemplary record as a professional and international player, and as an ambassador for Scotland, having won, among other top level successes, a Commonwealth Gold Medal for Scotland in 1998; notes that the decision to transfer to England is being considered with regret, and would result from Scotland’s lack of financial support for top players, and urges sportscotland and the Scottish Executive to do everything within their power to make available the resources necessary to ensure that Scotland’s top sportsmen and women do not have to transfer allegiance to ensure that their careers can be sustained.
