Montrose Air Station Commemorates its 101st Anniversary

That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Montrose Air Station will commemorate its 101st anniversary between 16 and 18 May 2014 as part of Museums Galleries Scotland’s Festival of Museums 2014, during which there will be re-enactments of life at the base as well as displays of aircraft and artefacts; understands that the air station was the UK's first operational military air base, as well as Scotland’s first military airfield, producing many of the UK's most famous pilots; further understands that the air station served as a training base for American soldiers during the First World War while housing British and Canadian squadrons and, during the Second World War, served as a training base for Allied nationals and as an operational airfield for Hurricane and Spitfire squadrons; believes that the air station is a registered charity run on an entirely voluntary basis, surviving without financial assistance from local or national government, and that all revenue goes toward running the heritage centre; encourages people to attend this commemoration and acknowledges the value of providing opportunities such as this to learn more about Scotland’s military history, and thanks all of those who have made the preservation of the air station possible, including all of the volunteers, the curator, Dr Daniel Paton, the centre secretary, Peter Davis, and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
