Free West Papua
The motion
That the Parliament supports the Free West Papua Campaign in its efforts to secure self-determination for the people of West Papua, which it believes is their fundamental right under international law; considers the annexation and occupation of West Papua since 1963 by Indonesia to be illegal; condemns the reported violations of human rights, including rape, torture, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, seizure of traditional lands, theft of natural resources and the extermination of tens of thousands of West Papuans; calls on Joko Widodo, the recently-elected president of Indonesia, to unconditionally release all of West Papua's political prisoners and to make West Papua open to international observers and aid organisations; further calls on him to commit to journalistic freedom, including the right of West Papuan and international journalists to report on the political situation without risk of imprisonment or harassment, and to enter into a dialogue with West Papuans in order to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict, and encourages members to join International Parliamentarians for West Papua.
