Equality Network, The Scottish LGBT Equality Report
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the Equality Network report, The Scottish LGBT Equality Report; understands that the report surveyed 1,052 respondents belonging to a variety of demographic groups from across Scotland, making it the most extensive report on LGBT inequality in Scotland to date; considers that, despite strong progress in tackling LGBT inequalities, there are still many barriers to equality for LGBT people in Scotland that have yet to be overcome; is concerned that the report found that 97% of LGBT people said that they have faced discrimination or prejudice in their lives, that 79% said that they had experienced these in the past year, with 49% experiencing these in the last month; considers that this sort of prejudice and discrimination can result in many LGBT people feeling unable to be open about who they are for fear of the consequences; recognises what it sees as the significance of the report’s conclusions, including the identification of remaining inequalities for LGBT people, such as in law, social attitudes, public services and employment, and urges the Scottish Government to consider the report’s recommendations, continuing its leadership role in the promotion of LGBT equality as part of its wider commitment to tackling inequalities across Scotland.
