The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2015 report on tuberculosis (TB); understands that, despite excellent progress since 2000, TB now ranks alongside HIV as a leading cause of death worldwide; applauds the reported 47% fall in mortality since 1990; understands that nearly all of this improvement has taken place since 2000, following the setting of the millennium development goals (MDG); believes that effective diagnosis and treatment saved an estimated 43 million lives between 2000 and 2014; believes that the MDG target to halt and reverse TB incidence has been achieved in each of the six WHO regions and in 16 of the 22 high-burden countries that collectively account for 80% of cases; welcomes the report's claim that, since 2000, the incidence of the condition has fallen by an average of 1.5% per year and it is now 18% lower; understands however that, in 2014, TB killed 890,000 men, 480,000 women and 140,000 children and that 1.1 million of these people were HIV-negative; believes that, in the same year, 5.4 million men, 3.2 million women and 1.0 million children fell ill with the condition; understands that the report records funding gaps of US $1.4 billion for the implementation of existing interventions in 2015 and US $1.3 billion for research and development, and hopes that, as part of an effective continuing campaign to achieve the aims of the World Health Assembly's End TB Strategy that was launched in 2014, all countries will recommit to ensure adequate funding.
