Opposing Restrictions on the Freedom to Protest

Lodged by John Wilson Standard Motion 8 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament condemns what it understands is the recent decision by the UK Government to ban public bodies, including local councils and some university student unions, from carrying out the BDS Movement's campaigns against, and boycott's of, Israeli goods; asserts that people have a right to protest and that this can take many shapes or forms; understands that similar campaigns helped weaken the South African state during the apartheid era; believes that such public bodies have a right to take protest action without interference from central government, and wholly condemns what it sees as the UK Government's attack on peaceful protest.
