Trimontium Museum Extension

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes plans for a £1.9 million extension to the Trimontium Museum in Melrose, which is expected to boost visitor numbers from 3,000 to 12,000 per year; understands that the museum displays one of Scotland’s premier collections of Roman artefacts, which were uncovered during excavations at the site of the Roman fort near Newstead at the beginning of the 20th century, many of which are now on display at the National Museum of Scotland; acknowledges the prominent role that Trimontium played within Roman Scotland, as a major Roman staging post on Dere Street, providing an important halfway point between Hadrian’s Wall and the more northerly Antonine Wall; notes that the museum secured funding through the National Lottery and is set to apply for more money in March 2019; acknowledges that construction work is due to start in the summer of 2020 and that the expanded museum is expected to open in the second quarter of 2021; recognises the dedicated work of a small group of volunteers who have played an essential role in preserving this remarkable piece of Romano-Celtic history, and thanks all those involved for their committed service to the museum during its 28 years of operation.
