Glasgow Athletes Selected for the European Youth Olympics

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Lewis Moore, who is 15, and Owen Vinter, 17, and who are both from Glasgow, on being selected by the British Olympic Association as two of the 27 athletes to represent Team GB at the 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF), which runs from 9 to 16 February in Sarajevo; notes that Lewis will compete in snowboarding and Owen in Alpine skiing; acknowledges that Team GB will have athletes in seven of the eight disciplines, participating in a mixture of alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, short-track speed skating and snowboarding; notes that the team consists of athletes aged between 15 and 18; believes that the EYOF plays a crucial role in the development of young athletes and that the competition will provide man with their first multi-sport experience; hopes that the aspiring Olympians will follow in the footsteps of Chemmy Alcott and Katie Summerhayes, who have both graduated to represent Team GB at an the Winter Olympics; notes that Sarajevo will be the 14th edition of the EYOF and the first time that it will be hosted in Bosnia and Herzegovina; understands that approximately 1,500 athletes from 50 countries will take part, in what is Europe’s largest multi-sport event, and wished Lewis, Owen and Team GB good luck and hopes that they have an enjoyable experience.
