The motion

That the Parliament commends Contact the Elderly in Scotland, the national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people; notes that the charity works to empower older people to make new social connections, encouraging them to break out of the detrimental cycle of social isolation by forging inter-generation links and encouraging friendships to develop between the older group members and volunteers; acknowledges that the charity has been tackling loneliness since 1965 through free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 or over who live alone; understands that the tea parties take place on Sundays, which can be a particularly lonely day of the week for older people, and that they are kept purposely small, meeting in the welcoming environment of someone’s home; applauds the 1,600 volunteers who are working to provide this vital service; notes that the charity now has 1,000 older people attending afternoon teas on a monthly basis, and hopes that the friendships of everyone involved continue well into the future.
