Motion · S5M-16194 · 6 Mar 2019
Chagos Islands
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the advisory opinion delivered by the International Court of Justice that the Chagos Islands were not lawfully separated from Mauritius when the latter gained its independence from the UK in 1968; understands that the then British government evicted the entire population of the Chagos Islands, Chagossians, in 1970 before inviting the United States to build a military base on Diego Garcia, one of the larger atolls, and supports the calls for the Chagos Islands to be given back to the native displaced population.
