Recognition and Remembrance of Paul Scott

The motion

That the Parliament expresses its sadness at the death of Paul Scott, who passed away at the age of 98 on15 March 2019; notes the contribution that was made to Scottish society by Paul, who was born in Edinburgh and educated at the University of Edinburgh, through his distinguished service in the Second World War and subsequently as a diplomat; considers that he helped shape the course of international events during his time as a diplomat in the Foreign Office, as he used his contacts in the Cuban leadership at the height of the missile crisis in October 1962 to discover that the Soviet Union was disarming its nuclear missiles and was able to alert US authorities that the Soviets were standing down their nuclear threat; believes that he helped to shape the fabric of Scottish public and political life through his rectorship of the University of Dundee, his presidency of both the Saltire Society and the Scottish Centre for International PEN, his vice-presidency of the Scottish National Party and his role in the Campaign for a Scottish Assembly; recognises the high esteem in which he was held by all who knew him, and sends its sincere condolences to his family and friends.
