Calls for Peace in Kashmir

That the Parliament recognises international calls for peace in the Jammu and Kashmir region; notes what it sees as increased tensions along the line of control and the related increase of civilian deaths that have occurred since 2017; further notes the escalation of conflict in February 2019 in which 40 members of the Indian central reserve paramilitary police died and a retaliatory airstrike heightened tensions in the region; understands that, in the period 2008 to 2018, there have been 4,059 deaths recorded in the disputed region; urges peace to be sought and prioritised by state and other political players; acknowledges that both India and Pakistan are nuclear armed states; notes with concern the rhetoric from both states that asserts undefined missile use as an acceptable response to the conflict; recognises the concerns of communities in the Glasgow Anniesland Constituency; notes calls to encourage dialogue and the pursuit of concrete steps to be taken internationally towards curbing the nuclear threat, and further notes the view that movement towards ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is a means to achieving this end.
