Jess Ewing Wins Fereday Prize
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Kirkwall Grammar School (KGS) pupil, Jess Ewing, on winning the top award in the 2019 Fereday Prize; acknowledges too the achievement of Magnus Craigie and Murray Clark whose work was placed second and third respectively overall; understands that the Fereday Prize is an annual competition run by the Orkney Heritage Society, which puts the research skills of second year pupils from Kirkwall Grammar School and Stromness Academy to the test; notes that the prize was set up in 1986 in honour of former Principal Teacher of History at KGS, Ray Fereday; understands that the pupils research and write an essay on a topic of their choice; notes that Jess’s paper was entitled, “How the Italian Chapel has been preserved for future generations”; recognises the hours of hard work that Jess and others who took part in the competition put into their work, and believes that the Fereday Prize is an excellent way of encouraging an ongoing interest in local history in future generations.
