200th Anniversary Exhibition for Charles Piazzi Smyth

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the exhibition at the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill in Edinburgh marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of astronomer, Charles Piazzi Smyth; understands that Smyth was appointed Astronomer Royal for Scotland at the age of just 26, a post that he would eventually fill for over 40 years; considers that he played an instrumental part in Edinburgh’s history, instigating the One O’Clock Gun at Edinburgh Castle and installing the Time Ball on top of the Nelson Monument, acting as a signal for ships in the Firth of Forth; acknowledges the influence that he had on the practice of astronomy around the world, including the technique of infra-red astronomy, and hopes that the exhibition will be well attended to mark the bicentenary of the birth of this important historical figure.
