LGBT Syrian Legal Campaign

Lodged by Alex Cole-Hamilton (Scottish Liberal Democrats) Standard Motion 14 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament understands that 15 LGBT Syrian refugees launched a legal campaign on 15 April 2019 against the Home Office on the basis that they are still waiting to be taken to safety two years after applying for the scheme; believes that many are now living in hiding in Turkey as a result of the delay; notes that the LGBT refugees have reported homophobic discrimination and attacks in Turkey, including being pelted by rocks; recognises that resettlement schemes are seen as the pinnacle of sanctuary options with people being accepted in small numbers to the UK; commends Scotland’s history of welcoming refugees and asylum seekers from across the globe; acknowledges that, across Scotland, over 2,500 refugees have been welcomed through the Syrian and vulnerable children’s resettlement scheme, and hopes that the Home Office will take action to ensure the safety of individuals by finding suitable placements.
