Lodged by Keith Brown (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 18 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament commends the announcement of a deposit return scheme by the Scottish Government, which it considers represents its serious commitment to tackling the climate emergency; further considers that Scotland is again leading the rest of the UK by being the first to commit to such a scheme; acknowledges what it sees as the strong public support for the scheme, which will include PET, aluminium and steel cans and glass containers above 50ml and up to 3 litres in size; notes the economic opportunities for Making Things Last, Scotland's first circular economy strategy, encouraging businesses to embrace new business models, manufacturing processes and transforming used products into assets; further notes the ambitious and, what it considers, credible 90% target capture rate for each material; believes that this is a significant step in meeting Scotland’s zero-waste ambition, and welcomes the Scottish Government’s commitment to creating a more circular economy, preventing litter and addressing climate change.
