National Thrombosis Week

Lodged by Jackie Baillie (Scottish Labour) Standard Motion 14 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament supports Thrombosis UK in organising National Thrombosis Week 2019; welcomes the week's core message, which asks everyone to “Think Thrombosis” in order to prevent the condition, and protect and inform the public; recognises the vital importance of the week in raising public awareness and clinical knowledge, particularly in light of figures suggesting that, each year, one in every 1,000 people in the UK develops venous thromboembolism; understands that the charity has said that, although there has been increased attention given to the condition in the last five years, its research suggests that there is still much to be done, including a need to enhance clinical knowledge, as 55% of thrombosis-related deaths are believed to be due to clots formed in hospital and that 75% of clots occur after a hospital stay; congratulates Thrombosis UK on the awareness week, and wishes it well with its work.
