75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which took place on 6 June 1944 and marked the start of the Allied forces’ campaign to liberate Northern Europe from Nazi occupation; notes that there are a number of commemorative events taking place in both Scotland and France to remember the contribution that Scottish soldiers made to the campaign, including a lament played in Arromanches in Normandy by a lone piper, Pipe Major Trevor Macey-Lillie of East Ayrshire; understands that Pipe Major Macey-Lillie began his lament on top of the remaining Mulberry artificial harbour in the town at 06.25, signalling the time at which the first British soldier stepped onto Gold Beach at the beginning of the D-Day landings; acknowledges that, as part of the commemorations, a number of Scottish veterans are joining a group of 300 Allied forces veterans in attending ceremonies at Bayeux Cathedral and Bayeux War Cemetery, where many of the fallen were buried; recognises the bravery shown by all those who took part in the D-Day landings, including the Scottish soldiers, sailors, air crew and engineers, who made this pivotal operation possible through their personal sacrifices; pays tribute to the estimated 4,400 allied troops who died during the operation, including the hundreds from Scottish regiments, and believes that the events of 6 June 1944 and the lives lost that day should be remembered for generations to come.
