Dogs Trust Freedom Project

The motion

That the Parliament commends the Dogs Trust for introducing its Freedom Project to cover the whole of Scotland, which provides a vital pet fostering service for those fleeing domestic abuse; considers that research shows that there is a strong link between the abuse of people and the abuse of pets, and that it is known that pets are often used by perpetrators as a tool to coerce and control their partners, as well as acting as a barrier for someone escaping abuse; notes that the Freedom Project expanded into Scotland in 2018 and is now running a full service across the country; understands that, so far, 34 dogs have been fostered, helping 23 people to escape domestic abuse; further understands that, in addition, 20 dogs have now been safely reunited with their families; notes that the Dogs Trust wants to raise awareness of the project and thank its foster carers, as, without them, the Project could not function so successfully; thanks the domestic abuse support services that have supported the launch of the service across Scotland, and notes that if anyone wants further information about accessing the project or on how to become a foster carer, this is available on the website, moretodogstrust.org.uk/freedom-project/freedom-project.
