Heather Nicol Wins Inspirational Young Adult Award
The motion
That the Parliament recognises the achievement of Heather Nicol in winning the Inspirational Young Adult Award at the 2019 Edinburgh Evening News Edinburgh Local Hero Awards for her campaigning to improve the rights of children and young people to be able to refuse to see a parent convicted of domestic abuse; considers that this category recognises, encourages and rewards people aged 16 to 24 who have shown exceptional drive and determination for a cause or belief in the face of adversity; notes that Heather, through her campaign, has gathered considerable support with an online petition and put her cause directly to Scottish Government ministers, and believes that Scotland is leading the way on tackling domestic abuse and that Heather’s Law represents one of the final steps to take to extend the rights of young people, whose own lives can be deeply affected by domestic abuse, to be allowed to have their say.
