National Wallace Monument's 150th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates the 150 years since the National Wallace Monument in Stirling was officially opened to the public on 11 September 1869; notes that the occasion will be marked by a day of celebrations at the visitor attraction; acknowledges that this day, which has been named "Wallace Wha Hae" by the organisers, EventScotland, and will include song and dance performances from the Monument School of Performing Arts, gripping battle stories from costumed soldiers and a guided archaeologist’s tour of the Abbey Craig, which overlooks the site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge; understands that the festivities will culminate in a spectacular light display that will illuminate the Monument in striking colours and patterns, followed by a burst of celebratory fireworks that will be visible from the Abbey Craig, and much of Stirling; believes that it is thought that over 100,000 people witnessed the laying of the foundation stones in 1861; recognises what it sees as the importance of the monument in the telling of Scotland’s history and achievements; understands that it is estimated that, over the last 50 years, there have been a total of 4.3 billion steps taken by visitors climbing the 246 steps of its famous spiral staircase, which is equivalent to over nine million visitors; believes that the growing popularity of the attraction has been symptomatic of the wider surge in the popularity of Stirling’s many historical sites such as Stirling and Doune castles, and wishes all involved with the Monument continued success over the next 150 years and beyond in attracting visitors from around the world.
