The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Olympic silver medallist, Michael Jamieson, on launching what it understands is Glasgow’s first swimming academy; believes that Michael, who has retired from competition, will launch this self-funded venture on 15 September 2019 to give every baby, child and adult in the west of Scotland the opportunity to swim; understands that learners and sports stars of the future will have access to world-class coaches who have been hand-picked by Michael; hopes that this will help foster a love of the sport and potentially identify future talent; understands that, following an injury that led to him missing training, Michael experienced poor mental health; notes therefore that he hopes that this venture will help children use the tools of sport to develop both emotional fitness and the mental resilience required to cope with life’s darker moments; acknowledges that the lessons will initially be available at four venues, St Roch’s secondary and Govan High schools in Glasgow, and pools in Hamilton and Clydebank, but notes that more locations are planned, and wishes Michael the best of luck with this venture.
