60th Anniversary of the Auchengeich Mining Disaster
The motion
That the Parliament remembers with the greatest of respect the men who lost their lives on 18 September 1959 in what is acknowledged as the worst mining disaster in Scotland’s history; notes that, on this day, 48 men entered the Auchengeich Mine in Moodiesburn with 47 of them never to return home to their families and loved ones; understands that lives were lost due to suffocation caused by a fire deep below the ground that started due to a fault with equipment in one of the pits; commends the rescue attempts made by the local community and teams from other local mines, which were sadly ineffective; acknowledges the devastation caused on this day and the shock and sorrow at laying to rest the 47 men, the youngest of which was 22 and the eldest 62, and which left 67 children without a father, made 41 women widows and left a community devastated; remembers the names of Alexander Morrison Beattie, Thomas Bone, Francis Broadley, William Brynes, Walter Clark, Henry Clayton, Robert Conn, Andrew Crombie, James Devine, Andrew Docherty, John Duffy, Francis Jones Fisher, Martin Fleming, Michael Fleming, Richard Hamilton, James Harvey, Patrick Harvey, Edward Henery, George Jackson, Peter Kelly, Francis Kiernan, William Lafferty, Alexander Todd Lang, William Leishman, Gerald John Martin, John McAuley, Robert McCoid, Joseph McDonald, Denis McElhaney, Mathew McIlwain Cannon, George Thomas Thompson McEwan, George Wilkie McIntosh, Andrew McKenna, James McPhee, Peter McMillan, William Meechan, John Muir, John Mulholland (Senior), James Nimmo, Aaron Price, Robert Price, Alexander Sharp, John Shevlin, William Skilling, John Mack Stark, Thomas Stokes and Donald Cameron Weir, and acknowledges that they are 47 men who the local communities will not forget.
