Robert Coltart and his Candy

The motion

That the Parliament commends everyone involved in raising the funds to commission a statue to Robert Coltart, the former weaver and, latterly, confectioner of Galashiels who is famed for his jingle, Ally Bally Bee, to help sales of his candy and is now an international children’s nursery song; congratulates the sculptor, Angela Hunter of Innerleithen, for capturing the verve and spirit of this flamboyant and jaunty man; considers that few statues pay tribute to ordinary men and women who have made such a difference to communities, but trusts that the statue to Robert Coltart in Market Square in Galashiels, which is now adorned with ribbons tied there by local children, encourages other communities to commemorate their “unsung" local heroes.
