Dogs Trust Marks Official Launch of Domestic Abuse Support Service in Scotland
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, on its successful launch of the Dogs Trust Freedom Project in Scotland on 19 September 2019; understands that the Freedom Project is a landmark project that provides a vital pet fostering service to people fleeing domestic abuse; acknowledges that, since the introduction of the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018, there has been increased awareness surrounding domestic abuse barriers to people fleeing domestic abuse; understands that three out of four pet-owning abuse victims say that their partners have threatened or hurt their animals in an attempt to bully and control them, while 75% of abusive partners with pets threatening the animal to force their victim to remain in the relationship, including in the Almond Valley constituency; acknowledges that 30 dogs have now been fostered across Scotland over the last year by victims fleeing domestic abuse, and wishes the Dogs Trust every success with the project.
