Hailes Quarry Park Receives Green Flag Award
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Hailes Quarry Park on receiving a Green Flag Award; applauds the efforts of the Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust, the local community and parks officer, who have made vital improvements to the park; welcomes the fact that Keep Scotland Beautiful has awarded a quarter of Edinburgh’s parks with such an award; recognises the importance of green space for health and social prescribing; notes that Fields in Trust estimates the wellbeing value associated with the frequent use of green spaces is worth £2.8 billion per year to the adult population of Scotland and savings of approximately £9.1 million per year to NHS Scotland, based on fewer GP visits; considers that urban parks and green spaces play a critical role in cooling cities, and also provide safe routes for walking and cycling for transport purposes as well as sites for physical activity, social interaction and for recreation, and agrees that green spaces such as Hailes Quarry Park should be protected from development.
