International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the UN International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on 26 September 2019; notes that the UN has sought to eliminate nuclear weapons since its establishment, with its first-ever resolution relating to this peace process; recognises the progress in nuclear disarmament that has taken place over the last two years with the adoption of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; notes the work of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning organisation, ICAN, in bringing this treaty to fruition and subsequently supporting countries in the ratification process, with Kazakhstan as the most recent State Party to the treaty; further notes the Move the Money Campaign, which highlights the one trillion dollars wasted annually on nuclear weapons programmes globally, rather than being used to help end poverty, protect the climate and build global peace, and highlights the continued call of the UN on states for the total elimination of nuclear weapons for the purposes of peace and security.
