25th Anniversary of the FAIRTRADE Mark

The motion

That the Parliament notes the 25th anniversary of the launch of the FAIRTRADE Mark in the UK, which began a seismic shift in the way that people consider the labour behind the food, drink and clothing they buy; understands that more than 1.6 million farmers and workers in over 1,200 organisations around the world are part of the Fairtrade scheme, which protects them from volatile prices for their produce and supports access to education and clean drinking water for adults and their families to the benefit of whole communities; believes that the FAIRTRADE Mark is now attributed to around 5,000 products on sale in the UK and that awareness of Fairtrade certification is at a record high and trusted by 84% of consumers; acknowledges that Scotland has been a Fairtrade nation since May 2014 with all six major cities having gained Fairtrade status, and that East Dunbartonshire recently celebrated its 10th anniversary of being named a Fairtrade Zone, and notes that, with over 80% of Scotland’s local authorities having achieved this status, there are calls to continue to support and promote the values of the FAIRTRADE Mark and the vital stability and improvements in conditions that it provides to farmers in developing countries to reverse the cycle of poverty enforced by low prices for their work and products.
